THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER IN THE WORLD OF MANAGEMENT. THIS IS WHY PEOPLE NEED TO OBTAIN BASIC MANAGERIAL THOUGHTS AND PRACTICE THEM.

Bond with a comrade produces synergistic effect

  • Could you please tell us about Co. MCP JAPAN?

Zhang: Co. MCP JAPAN manufactures and sells products that other companies do not deal in or focus on such as meters. For example, there is a machine called an oscilloscope, which shows invisible electronic signals with a form of waves. An oscilloscope used to be a digital device, which led to some problems such as inaccuracy of the wave because it did not capture high-speed waves. Especially for beginners who just started to learn about electricity, it was hard to adjust to the digital devices. According to this problem, we created an analogue oscilloscope, which captures high-speed waves and covers the disadvantage of the digital oscilloscope.

  • Is the main target of the business educational organizations?

Zhang: Yes. For example, the oscilloscope I just mentioned is mostly provided to technical high schools and colleges. We also provide educational kits to learn the system of vehicles which fully consists of electronic circuits for new engineers and mechanics. In fact, one famous foreign capital car brand who used to order similar learning kits from other Japanese companies, fully changed their supplier to us because we provide the kit with a more reasonable price and short delivery time.

  •  So, the business activities are based on disadvantages and consumers’ negative reviews of mainstream products.

Zhang: Yes, that is right. I see a lot of enterprises try to contribute to society by returning profits that they have earned from special projects. However, I do not believe it is right. I believe that their activity itself must be something that contributes to society. Services and products that solve consumers’ problems are always demanded and it generate profits. Anyone can do anything to earn profits; however, I strongly believe enterprises of a country should work for the citizen’s needs, not for profits.

  • Is it related to the reason for your entrepreneurship in Oita? Did you have any thoughts on solving problems in this prefecture?

Zhang: I studied management in Oita University and it helped me with developing myself a lot. However, I always felt frustrated because I had not returned anything back to Oita. I wanted to contribute to Oita’s society by establishing a company. I am grateful to have a good bond with my comrade Mr. Mashima, who helped me with my entrepreneurship and helped me make the decision to start the business while in university.

  • What exactly do you mean by the good bond?

Zhang: Having good relationships with your companies is very important especially in foreigners’ entrepreneurship. I am from China and still learning a lot about Japanese words, culture, customs and so on. It is impossible to adjust by myself in a foreign environment. However, I can always rely on my company Mr. Mashima because there is strong trust between us. Also helping each other produces synergistic effects and make it possible to perform your best a lot better than doing it all alone. I am a type of person who loves being in trouble, which enables me to have challenging spirits as a manager. On the other hand, Mr. Mashima is very sensitive and careful about every single task, which I am not good at. I am so blessed to have him because we as a team have a good balance and bond.

Courage and hope for international students

  • It is wonderful you both accept each other’s personality. We would also like to ask about SAP. As a manager, what was the main thing you learned from SAP?

Zhang: The biggest thing I learnt from this program was the thought/mindset as a manager. I often perform analysis of business models when I was in university, but it is totally different and important to see businesses from a manager’s perspective. The professional mentors with abundant experiences are always supportive and provide accurate advice, which is a privilege of participating in this program. The mentors enabled me to take quick actions for entrepreneurship.

  • Could you please tell us your future prospective?

Zhang: I am planning to manufacture Made in Oita products. The keyword is Alliance. As I mentioned about synergistic effects between co-workers, the same can be said between enterprises. I would love to form an alliance with other enterprises that focus on specific departments and deal in solving problems of consumers in Oita. Then eventually, I would like to contribute to the economy of Oita prefecture. I would also like to help a lot of international students with their entrepreneurship as incubation manager. For example, the tourism industry of Oita had a huge damage due to the spread of covid-19 and development in other industries is required in order to revitalize Oita prefecture. As Oita has a lot of international residents with unique ideas and personality, I believe it is important to provide them opportunities to realize their will and potentials. I hope my existence will be a hope for many international students in Oita.

  • Thank you for your answers. Lastly, do you have a message for international students who are thinking of entrepreneurship?

Zhang: In school, we learn 1+1=2. However, there is no answer in entrepreneurship. That is why it is important to learn basic thought/mindset of management and to practice it in real life. You can learn a lot from seniors. But do not copy it. Just because Steve Jobs or Bill Gates quit a university, you do not have to quit a university. Try to take a step that is suitable for you. Also, in Chinese, there are words called “Jin (仁)” and ”Rei(礼)”, which means “Be considerate and express appreciation.” I would like a lot of people to find their place without forgetting “Jin” and ”Rei”.
